'Many Rivers' - Live in Grand Canyon

In the summer of 2010 we led an educator's expedition through Grand Canyon on the Colorado River. The trip represented our work coming around full circle to where it began - from the literal wilderness of Grand Canyon, to the New Wilderness of communities across the country and back again.

On day five we stopped at one of our most cherished spots - Blacktail Canyon - and played some music for our community. This video of us performing 'Many Rivers' was shot there within the cool solitude and incredible acoustics created by the beautiful tapeats sandstone.

Listen to Youth Voice!

Each year at the White Privilege Conference the space is created for youth to learn, creatively express themselves and share their voices in support of social justice and equity.

In this space called the Youth Leadership Conference, high school youth from around the country come together to explore and understand white privilege, power, oppression, racism, self identity, and allied living. The outcome is strong team of more than 150 youth who are connected and committed to developing and sharing strategies for community action and social change.

New Wilderness Project (Benjie and Maketa) were part of a national team of facilitators and educators who had the honor of working with these incredible youth. Thanks to our friends and colleagues from Start Dialogue (Tarah Fleming), Headrush (Rosa Gonzalez), WadeInTheWorld (Wade Colwell-Sandoval), Athenian School (Lizette Dolan) and Head-Royce School (Willie Adams) - and of course Dr. Eddie Moore Jr. (America And Moore) Much respect!

Listen to Youth Voice speak their truth OUT LOUD!!

Student leaders from Zimmerman and Rogers High Schools in Minnesota return to apply their skills, support their peers and share their experience of the New Wilderness Project equity and leadership program.

New Wilderness Project works in partnership with schools and organizations across the country. Through multimedia performance art and an experientially delivered, integrated curriculum, our work builds awareness of diversity, develops cultural competence and leadership skills, supports equity in student achievement, encourages stewardship for nature, and provides a framework for participants to take creative action.
